With the success of Progress and Poverty, Henry George enjoyed enormous popularity and recognition. Years later, in her biography of her father, the younger Anna had only good things to say about him. She also had an idyllic view of her parents’ marriage, and so it was a devastating emotional blow to the entire family when fifty-eight-year-old Henry died suddenly of a heart attack in 1897. Anna was twenty years old, and she was already self-sufficient and fiercely independent. Anna’s piercing blue eyes, waist-length golden-red hair, and feminine demeanor were attributes enough to attract many suitors, but she had adored William since before she had proposed to him nine years earlier.
In his free time, Henry wrote his economics bible, Progress and Poverty (1879). He proposed in his “Single Tax” theory to abolish all taxes except the tax levied on the value of land. George explained his rationale for his “Single Tax” theory this way: When we tax houses, crops, money, furniture, capital, or wealth in any of its forms, we take from individuals what rightfully belongs to them. We violate the right of property, and in the name of the state commit robbery. But when we tax ground values, we take from individuals what does not belong to them, but belongs to the community, and which cannot be left to individuals without the robbery of other individuals.
There was another woman in William’s life, one he would eventually marry. Anna, on the other hand, turned to her daughters for comfort and companionship. The three de Mille women went to Europe for what remained of the summer and then, instead of returning to Hollywood, took up residence once again in New York City. William provided generous financial support for Anna and his daughters, and he gave Anna the cottage at Merriewold as 64 De Mille onstage, c. 1930. Meeting obstacle after obstacle in her quest to achieve greatness in the art of dance, de Mille turned her attention toward choreography.
