Suppose a molecule of mass m to approach a flat wall surface lying in the x, y plane with velocity component vz perpendicular to the wall. Since the molecule rebounds with the same speed, the change of momentum per impact is 2mvz. If ν molecules strike unit area in unit time with velocity component vz, the total impulse exerted on the unit area per unit time is 2mvzν. But the pressure, P, on a wall is defined as the rate at which momentum is imparted to a unit area of surface. Hence, where the summation is over all values of vzν and it is assumed that all molecules have the same mass m.
