As we will see in Section 2, this process can be generalized easily to using any number of colors, and with a bit more creativity to any stripe height. ) Helix striping is always worked in the round. Knitting stripes with height greater than one involves using multiple strands of each color, which is irritating at the start of the construction because one has to make multiple balls of each color. But the knitting process is as easy as when knitting using a single strand of each color, and this makes it worth one’s while.
However, predicting how these colors will fall in a finished knitted project is quite difficult, and so a knitter who desires a particular color pattern usually uses separate balls of yarn in different colors. Within the realm of colorwork in knitting, there are several techniques. Intarsia refers to blocks of color, where different colors of yarn are used in different regions of a given project. Only one ball of yarn is used at a time, and the knitter switches balls of yarn when switching solid-color regions (see Figure 1).
